About the Campaign

Stroke - a non-communicable disease that attacks 15 million people worldwide every year and claims a life every six seconds – can be beaten.

Here are the facts:

  • Regardless of age, stroke can strike anyone at any time
  • Stroke can be prevented
  • Stroke survivors can regain their quality of life with appropriate care and long-term support

On World Stroke Day, 29 October, the WSO and its members worldwide will launch the “One in Six” campaign.  The theme was identified to mirror today’s reality that one in six people worldwide will have a stroke in their lifetime. With the fight against stroke at a crossroads, WSO members and partners around the world will join in solidarity to put forth a simple life-saving message on World Stroke Day: Do not take chances. One in six people is at risk for stroke – it could be you. Learn the facts. Save a life today. Act Now!

The campaign is asking people to commit to six stroke challenges:

  • Know your personal risk factors: high blood pressure, diabetes and high blood cholesterol.
  • Be physically active and exercise regularly.
  • Avoid obesity by keeping to a healthy diet.
  • Limit alcohol consumption.
  • Avoid cigarette smoke. If you smoke, seek help to stop now.
  • Learn to recognize the warning signs of a stroke and how to take action.

The 2010 to 2012 World Stroke Campaign – “One in Six” aims to disseminate essential life-saving information and share knowledge about actions and lifestyle behaviors that could avert the assault of stroke.  The campaign will also identify opportunities to improve and educate the lay public on the fundamental need for appropriate and quality long-term care and support for stroke survivors, including the empowerment of stroke care-providers.

Further media information will be made available prior to and during the launch of the campaign on World Stroke Day.

German Stroke Society – World Stroke Day – 29 October  2010

GERMANY

The German Stroke Society will initiate a nationwide educational campaign about stroke. Hospitals from the following cities (Hamburg, Kiel, Berlin, Dresden, Erfurt/Jena, Essen, Osnabrück, Frankfurt, Mannheim, Heidelberg, Erlangen, Nürnberg, Munich, among others) will participate and raise awareness among  the general public about stroke warning symptoms, risk factors and the appropriate procedures to ensure timely access to treatment and long-term well being after a stroke.  The educational campaign will also incorporate individual tests to measure the likelihood of a stroke in line with consultations on lifestyle and even the possibility of extra- and intracranial cardiovascular ultrasound tests. Another novelty of World Stroke Day 2010 is a scientific project being carried out under the leadership of Prof. Heuschmann, Center for Stroke Research Berlin (CSB) and the Dr. Wagner Foundation of the German Stroke Aid.  The project will attempt to measure the actual impact of educational campaigns amongst the population by handing out surveys to participants including monitoring knowledge, attitude, behaviors, perceptions (KABP). Furthermore, the quality of the educational campaign and its impact on the participants will also be measured in order to identify the most effective strategy.

Participating regions will be divided into three sectors with slightly different educational approaches:

1. Public lecture of an expert and Question & Answer (Q&A)

2. Public lecture of an expert and stroke survivor, Q & A sessions

3. Public lecture of an expert including an educational movie; Q & A sessions
