The Asian Federation of Psychiatric Associations (AFPA) will organize a two-day pre-congress Teaching and Training Program for young psychiatrists and primary care psychiatry physicians from 30-31 July 2011. This training fellowship aims to promote the professional development of young psychiatrists and to stimulate scientific contributions from young psychiatrists in Asia Pacific. A seminar to explore the role of spirituality and meditation in mental health. During our time together we will learn the method and practice of meditation in an informal and relaxed atmosphere with plenty of time for discussion. The retreat will be facilitated by Dr. Avdesh Sharma, Consultant Psychiatrist, India and senior members of the the Brahma Kumaris at a delightful, tranquil native bushland setting on the Mornington Peninsula, one hour from Melbourne. The venue will be the Centre for Spiritual Learning which is an award-winning design building, with floor to ceiling windows, which give an open inside-out feeling. Accommodation is twin-share with en suite and there is a view of the native gardens from the bedrooms. You will awake to native bird-song and there will be time for walks in the bush. How do professional psychologists meet the difficult challenge of developing their skills as writers? To address this question and the need for specialized training to facilitate graduate students' development as professional writers, a writers' workshop that features peer and instructor critiques of students' writing projects will be held during WCAP 2011. The training program aims to promote active learning and practice in writing, train students to seek consultation from others concerning their writing, provide structure and deadlines that enhance writing and research productivity, provide experience with editorial and grant review, and teach about the manuscript review process.

A working retreat among presidents of various Psychiatric Associations from Asia Pacific with WPA President Prof. Pedro Ruiz will be held one day prior to WCAP 2011. The retreat is aimed at setting future directions and developing a five-year work plan for Asian psychiatry with WPA.
