Leading supportive care in the 21st century.
The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) is an international, multidisciplinary organization with members representing over sixty (60) countries and five continents. MASCC is a tax-exempt 501(c)3 corporation. Founded in 1990, MASCC is dedicated to research and education in all aspects of supportive care for patients with cancer, regardless of the stage of their disease. In 1998 MASCC joined forces with the International Society of Oral Oncology (ISOO), an organization that addresses the management of complications arising in oral tissues secondary to cancer and its treatment.
MASCC/ISOO is unique in that it is a multi-professional organization that encompasses all aspects of cancer care beyond direct antineoplastic approaches. The membership profile includes oncology medical, surgical, and radiology physicians, nurses, dentists, dental hygienists, pharmacists, social workers, dieticians, outcomes specialists, psychologists, statisticians, infectious disease specialists, educators and representatives from industry and non-profit sectors. Physicians and nurses make up the majority of its nearly 800 members. Symposia are convened annually to share the most recent research in supportive care and to encourage networking among the disciplines and among colleagues from throughout the world. Membership in MASCC/ISOO includes subscriptions to the journal, Supportive Care in Cancer and to the periodical, Opinions on Topics in Supportive Care in Oncology.
The strength of the MASCC-ISOO alliance is through its study groups. These groups range in interest from mucositis and antiemetics to psychosocial, pediatrics and palliative care. Each group promotes and organizes research and education within their specialty. Members can chose to join a maximum of three study groups. Participating at the study group level becomes an avenue for networking internationally with colleagues who have like interest. Previous projects of the various study groups include conducting international surveys, developing evidence based clinical guidelines, and providing web based resources and education.
Significant advances in cancer treatment in the last two decades have been made possible by the strides in supportive care. MASCC/ISOO is dedicated to continuing this effort by providing a platform and resources for addressing the comprehensive, appropriate care to prevent, minimize, and treat side effects of cancer and its treatments.
