The Imperial War Museum was founded in 1917 in order to ensure future generations understood the causes, and most importantly the consequences of the First World War. The architecturally striking Grade II listed building that has housed Imperial War Museum London since 1936 was originally home to the former Bethlem Royal Hospital (known as Bedlam).
