About Salzburg

DISCOVER SALZBURG

Salzburg is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and has been carefully preserved over the centuries. It is divided by the Salzach River into two parts - the “Old City” and the “New City” and is surrounded by spectacular landscape, lakes, Alpine foothills and mountain peaks. Salzburg's "Old Town" (Altstadt) with its world famous baroque architecture is one of the best-preserved city centres north of the Alps,

The city of Salzburg reflects 2000 years of history. The palaces, archbishops’ churches, squares and fountains, and most notably the Fortress, reflect the love of splendor of the once powerful archbishops who ruled the city. The landmark of the City of Salzburg is the Fortress Hohensalzburg. This Castle has towered majestically over the rooftops of the “Old Town” area of Salzburg for 900 years. A 30 minute walk will take you up there or alternatively you can use the funicular railway, which leaves every 10 minutes from the Festungsgasse.

Other highlights include the Hellbrunn Palace which is located at the gateway to the city of Salzburg and in its complex you will find superbly landscaped gardens, the world-famous trick fountains, the Salzburg zoo, and the magnificent Palace.

Salzburg is known worldwide as the city of Mozart. In fact, much of the town still looks the same as it did in Mozart’s days. The home where Mozart was born and another where Mozart's family lived, have been turned into museums. (Mozart’s birthplace can be found Getreidegasse No.9),  the Music University was named after Mozart, so is the city's major symphony orchestra and the Mozarteum Foundation that is responsible for the most extensive research that has ever been done on any composer.

Finally a boat trip along the river Salzach is the perfect way to enjoy the magnificent views of the city and its surroundings.
