The Spanish Society for Microbiology (Sociedad Española de Microbiología, SEM) is a scientific organization founded in 1946 to promote the advance and dissemination of microbiology both in research and education. It gathers microbiologist from many different fields, both basic and applied. SEM members work on many different kinds on microorganisms, both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The SEM has currently more than 1700 members, which may belong to different categories: Ordinary, Student, Emeritus and Honorary. The SEM has presently 10 Specialized Groups, each one devoted to a specific field in the microbiological sciences. Both the SEM itself and the Groups organize different meeting and maintain different activities. There is a national congress of microbiology every two years. The SEM has currently three publications: the journal International Microbiology (quarterly), the internal bulletin Actualidad SEM (biannual) and the online-only hot-news report NoticiaSEM. Science magazine is published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest general scientific society. Science is the world’s leading scientific journal, with over 130,000 subscribers.

Cell Press publishes highly-cited research and reviews journals including Cell, Cell Host & Microbe, and Trends in Microbiology. Cell Host & Microbe provides a forum for the exchange of ideas between scientists studying the microbe and those studying the host immune and cellular response upon colonization or infection by a microbe. Trends in Microbiology provides succinct summaries, opinion, and discussion of exciting current research in all aspects of microbiology, including cell biology, immunology, genetics, evolution, virology, bacteriology, protozoology and mycology.
