Gothenburg is Sweden’s second largest city with 770,000 inhabitants. It is located on the west coast of Sweden. Although the city was founded in 1621 by King Gustav II Adolf, it was developed by city planners and canal experts from the Netherlands and Germany who left a heritage of Amsterdam-style canals around the city centre.
The Gothenburg region is one of the most popular areas for tourists in Scandinavia.
Some highlights of the city include:Liseberg Amusement Park, the largest amusement park in Scandinavia, is situated in the centre of the city. It has entertained millions of people since 1923. Liseberg has something for every age including the Kiddie bumpers and the Fairy Tale Castle, FlumeRide, Höjdskräcken and Kanonen, which takes riders to a speed of 75km/h in under three seconds. Liseberg is also home to Balder, the biggest wooden coaster in
Scandinavia.
Avenyn Street which is the street that is home to the highest density of restaurants in Sweden, Enjoy the cafés, nightclubs and bars and soak up the atmosphere.
The city is well known for its good quality cuisine, high class restaurants and seafood culture.
The Gothenburg Botanical Garden is the most beautiful garden in the country and one of the largest in Europe. Enjoy the diversity of the 13,000 different plant species located in the gardens.
TRAVEL TO GOTHENBURG
By air
Landvetter Airport (www.lfv.se/eng) is located 26km east of Gothenburg. Most
international flights are accessible from Copenhagen. The flight time from Copenhagen
to Gothenburg is 35 minutes. The Flygbuss (Airport Bus www.flygbussarna.se) travels
into the city every 15 minutes during peak hours. Taxis usually have a fixed rate to
the city center. The journey takes 20-30 minutes. Gothenburg City Airport is located
approximately 15 km from the centre. It operates business, charter and scheduled airline flights. The Flygbussarna bus is ready after each flight to take passengers to the bus and train terminal. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes.
By rail
The website of the Swedish rail company (SJ) is located at: http://www.sj.se/sj/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=10&l=en. The company is the major rail travel company in Sweden providing train service throughout Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The Central Station is situated in the center of Gothenburg on Drottningtorget square. Many tram and bus routes also stop at the station.
By bus
Swebus (www.swebus.se) is Sweden’s largest bus company.
The main bus stop in Gothenburg is located at Nils Ericson Gate.
By sea
There are ferries to Gothenburg from Denmark, Germany and the UK with several departures a day. SeaCat and Stena Line (www.stenaline.com) operate ferries to Frederikshavn, Denmark. The Stena Line terminal is located near Masthuggstorget,
which can be reached by trams 3, 4 or 9. DFDS Seaways (www.dfdsseaways.com)
travel to Kristiansand, Norway and Newcastle, UK.
DFDS ferries depart from a terminal located at the foot of the Gota Alvs bridge in
Hisingen. Buses to this terminal departfrom the central bus terminal.
By car
The roads E6, E20 and E45 pass through Gothenburg.

3. to Stockholm (40 east, E4): 500km, 5 to 6hrs

TRAVEL WITHIN GOTHENBURG
The city is compact and easily navigated by foot.
The Gothenburg Card ‘Goteborgskortet’ is a cheap way to get around the city as it offers unlimited access on local trams, buses and ferries as well as discounts on parking, taxis, tourist attractions and tours. 24 or 48-hour tickets are available at hotels, kiosks and the tourist offi ce.
Tram
Gothenburg has 204 trams covering 11 routes. The main tram hub is Brunnsparken. It is located only a couple of minutes walk from the train station. The trams run every 10 minutes during the day and once every hour at night, at weekends the night-trams run every 30 minutes.
Bus
Busses travel the same routes as trams. Note that all passengers enter the bus through the front door.
Ferry
The ferries Älvsnabben and Älvsnabbare travel across and along the riverdocking at several ports on the other side (Hisingen). They can be a nice way to see the city from the river. Ferries can also be taken from Saltholmen where you can take trips out to the archipelago. The city public transport ticket can be used for the ferries.
Bicycle
Gothenburg is a wonderful bike town with plenty of scenic and safe bike paths. Blue traffic signs with a white bicycle indicate the cycle paths. Note you must have bicycle lights if you ride your bike when it is dark.
