WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF ESPID 2012
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
It is a great pleasure for me to invite you on behalf of the Local Organizing and the International Scientific Committees to the 30th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases to be held May 8-12, 2012 in the beautiful city of Thessaloniki, Greece.
The main theme of this meeting is “Advances in Paediatric Infectious Diseases”. The top quality Scientific Programme, which has evolved through intense collaboration between local and international experts will open new insights and discussions on the latest advances and developments in the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of paediatric infectious diseases.
In addition to our traditional and highly popular activities, such as ESPID Symposia featuring talks by experts from all around the world, the Walter Marget Educational Workshop, the Meet the Professor sessions, the Interactive Case session, the Literature Review and several Research Lunch meetings, ESPID 2012 offers advanced initiatives. These include e-Poster discussion sessions to encourage exchange of knowledge and experience especially among the younger participants. Furthermore, Paediatric Infectious Diseases Society of America will officially participate for the second year by co-sponsoring a PIDS/ESPID high quality Symposium. All these will be the basis of an exciting scientific programme.
Besides invited talks, original contributions by clinicians and researchers with an interest in paediatric infectious diseases are more than welcome and encouraged. Your contribution to this meeting will mutually benefit all participants and help to make this event a success.
We are excited about the ever-increasing number of participants from around the globe in the last ESPID meetings and are convinced that this trend will continue in the 30th ESPID Meeting in Thessaloniki, creating an excellent forum for international scientific collaboration and friendship. Participation of colleagues from not only Europe but also other continents ensures a fertilizing environment for discussions of infectious diseases problems in children all over the world.
Obviously, the scientific programme will take most of the time of the participants. In addition however, an excellent social programme, which will allow you to network with your colleagues, is planned for those of you who want to take advantage of it. The meeting will take place very close to the historic center of Thessaloniki, and few minutes walk from the White Tower, the beautiful waterfront and many other sights. The amazing gem of Greece that is Thessaloniki, is an ancient and multicultural city known for its many Hellenistic, Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments and churches as well as some typical Ottoman and Sephardic Jewish buildings and sites. For those of you who are interested in modern life, Thessaloniki is a vivid city with excellent cuisine. For those who decide to stay for longer, Olympus Mountain, full of ancient hellenic mythology, and Vergina with its invaluable tomb of Alexander the Great’s father Philip wait to open their secrets. In addition, close by majestic Chalkidiki peninsula having excellent beaches and hosting the Mount Athos, the heart of eastern Christianity, is another choice of after-meeting experience.
In these challenging times we all live, we will do our utmost best to make this meeting and your stay in Thessaloniki an unforgettable experience!
With my warmest regards,
Chair, ESPID 2012 Meeting
on behalf of the Local Organizing and International Scientific Committees
We look forward to welcoming you in Thessaloniki in May, 2012!
