WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF EFIC
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
On behalf of EFIC, it is a pleasure and a privilege for me to welcome you to the 6th of the EFIC-conferences, “Pain in Europe VI” that will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, September 9 – 12, 2009.
EFIC is a large federation of 31 national scientific societies for the study of pain. There are more than 18,000 individual members of these 31 scientific societies, from many health professions, all interested in improving the understanding of pain mechanisms and the management of acute and chronic pain.
The broad field of pain medicine has been expanding rapidly in Europe. We have many active researchers in the basic neurosciences, as well as teachers and practitioners in many clinical specialties, including psychology and nursing. In several countries, Pain Medicine has already been officially approved as a specialty in medicine.
Our international scientific programme committee, under the able leadership of Michael Zenz is planning a programme that will cover most aspects of modern pain science and medicine.
Poster presentations and free-communication sessions will allow everybody with a message to others in the pain field, to present their research findings and clinical experience.
EFIC congresses have proved to be an effective opportunity for network building among pain scientists and pain clinicians in Europe. During EFIC congress in Lisbon, this most important objective of the Federation will continue to grow in importance. We encourage and welcome everyone with an interest in pain to take part. We strongly believe that you will benefit from attending this major pain congress in Lisbon.
Professor Giustino Varrassi EFIC President |

WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME COMMITTEE
Dear Colleagues,
One year after the World Congress in the north of Europe, in Glasgow, Scotland, we invite you to the next European Congress in the south of Europe, in Lisbon, Portugal. Pain in Europe VI is planned for the best time of the year in Southern Portugal - late summer.
The Scientific Committee has planned an exciting and most interesting programme covering all aspects of acute and chronic pain. Pain is still one of the main burdens of mankind. Pain affects more than 40 million people in Europe.
We have moved forward with great strides. Pain research is an enormous vibrant part of research in medicine and has brought about many new insights and substantial clinical advancements. The EFIC-Pain in Europe VI Congress will highlight both basic research and clinical practice. The refresher-course will be making further steps to a European Diploma in pain. Clinical case conferences will provide real clinical discussions including all interdisciplinary aspects. The overall format of the congress will remain very much the same as it was in the previous congresses held in Istanbul and Prague. However, the last day will be a full scientific day, ending with a closing ceremony and the awards.
We hope that you will join us and catch up on all the news; the latest results from labs and clinics; and enjoy the beauty of the wonderful and inspiring area of Lisbon and environments. Hope to see you in Lisbon for
Pain in Europe VI
On behalf of the Scientific Committee I invite you to join us and to participate in our next EFIC - Congress.
Best regards,
Prof. Michael Zenz
Chairman of the Scientific Committee
