Welcome Note

Dear Colleagues,

As local host and Chairperson for the 78th EAS Congress, it is my special pleasure, together with our EAS President, to invite you to Hamburg in June 2010. The Scientific Program Committee and the EAS Executive Committee have not only made a special effort to compile a program which incorporates the interests and orientations expressed by participants of preceding EAS Congresses, but also to include new topics at the cutting edge in the atherosclerosis field.

The Congress will be held in the modern and stylistic Hamburg Congress Center, which is located in the center of the city with most hotels within walking distance. The Congress Centre is adjacent to the main train station and 20 minutes from the Hamburg International Airport, thus allowing extremely rapid and practical access.

The program includes all aspects of the complex and multifactorial pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, including emerging questions on the role of obesity and insulin resistance as risk factors. We are especially sensitive to the need for clinical researchers and for scientists in the life sciences to work hand in hand towards a better understanding of the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis, towards the development of new diagnostic markers, and equally towards the development of new therapeutic strategies. A major goal of the Congress is therefore to facilitate and reinforce contact and networking between basic and clinical researchers. To guarantee the quality of future clinical and basic research in our field, exchange and discussion between experienced colleagues and young scientists must be enthusiastically promoted. For this reason, we have designated two time slots exclusively for poster discussions ; one on Monday late afternoon combined with a complementary buffet dinner (which replaces the traditional Speakers Dinner), and a second one on Tuesday which will include a buffet lunch. These events will be located in the center of the Exhibition area and in this way we expect to stimulate extensive scientific exchange as well as creating a pleasurable occasion for social interactions. Last but not least, we trust that our partners from the private sector will appreciate this new concept and will enthusiastically support the 78th EAS Congress with their contribution, particularly as the Exhibition area is located at the heart of the event, next to the plenary lecture hall and integrated into the poster area.

Finally and importantly, the Executive Committee of the EAS has decided to substantially reduce the registration fee for EAS members and Young Investigators at our Congress, and therefore we hope that in spite of the economic situation, we can motivate you to participate in the Congress.

Your support and participation are critical to its success!

Yours sincerely,
