UK PIN 2011 Speaker Spotlight |
|
UK PIN 2011 is proud to welcome Doctors Desa Lilic and Ann Gardulf, who will be among the Conference’s Invited Speakers.
Dr. Desa Lilic

The focus of Dr. Desa Lilic’s research for over a decade has been chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC). Over the years, she has collaborated and published widely on this disease. Very recently (29 June 2011), together with colleagues in Nijmegen, Holland, Dr. Lilic published her latest research in the New England Journal of Medicine identifying heterozygous mutations in STAT1 as the basis of an autosomal dominant form of CMC associated with hypothyroidism. The mutation leads to defective IL-12R and IL-23R pathway activity involved in the regulation of Th1 and Th17 responses. These results highlight a previously unappreciated role of STAT1 in regulating IL-17 responses, opening new horizons for improving future care and management of patients with fungal diseases.
Dr. Ann Gardulf
Ann Gardulf has a PhD degree from Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. She is a registered nurse and developed the rapid subcutaneous IgG (SCIG) replacement therapy and published the first original article about the method in The Lancet in 1991. Her research interests are in primary immunodeficiencies with a focus on SCIG replacement therapy. Furthermore, she is interested in health perceptions, health-related quality of life (HRQL), coping, patient satisfaction and patient education in relation to individuals with PID. She is author of more than 60 original articles and was the first to perform and publish studies on HRQL in adults and children with PID. She holds a number of research and administrative positions such as Senior Clinical Lecturer in Immunology at Karolinska Institutet. She was appointed Government Chief Nurse for Sweden from 2003-2007 and Vice-Chancellor and Professor of the Red Cross University College in Stockholm 2007-2011.

Welcome from Dr. Phillip Wood Chair, UK PIN |
|
Dear Delegate,
UK PIN would like to welcome you to their 7th biennial forum in Liverpool, which is being held this time immediately after the BSI annual Congress. As always the programme is varied and exciting and I am sure we will all benefit from and enjoy the broad areas to be presented and discussed. In addition the social event on the Friday evening promises to be as enjoyable as ever.
As well as participating in the forum, I hope you will have time to visit the various sites of the historic city of Liverpool. We have been fortunate in having Kenes UK as our forum organiser and I would like to thank them for the tremendous amount of work they have contributed to the event.
We are also grateful to Dr Peter Arkwright, Chair, and the other members of the organising committee for all their hard work in arranging the speakers, judging and chairing the sessions.
Finally we would like to thank our sponsors, without whom this meeting would not have happened. Please do visit them at their stands.
Many thanks for your support in making the forum an enjoyable educational and social event.
Dr Philip Wood Chairman UK PIN |

For the first time UKPIN are having their biennial meeting in the purpose built ARENA conference centre in the historic heart of Liverpool. The venue not only is right on the Mersey with easy rail and air routes to all part of the UK and beyond, but also has the latest in conference facilities and technology.
We have ensured that this year’s meeting has high quality sessions which will interest not only clinicians but also nursing and clinical laboratory colleagues, who are all very much part of the primary immunodeficiency network.
Plenary sessions and parallel symposia will be complemented by:
- Cutting-edge research presentations from aspiring academics in the UK
- The latest medical and nursing issues, as well as laboratory investigations.
- Complex clinical cases with seminal take-home messages will also be factored into the varied programme.
A debate on the role of home therapy for the management of hereditary angioedema will round off this forthcoming British Immunodeficiency Conference.
The meeting provides the opportunity to showcase your department’s research and complex cases and we very much hope you will contribute to the event as well as learn from it.
Finally to complete the experience, this year’s heavily subsidised gala dinner will include life band Beatles music.
