The World Stroke Organization (WSO) was established in October 2006 from the merger of the International Stroke Society (ISS) and the World Stroke Federation (WSF). The mission of WSO is to reduce the global burden of stroke worldwide.
Members are individual doctors from over 70 countries as well as professional and stroke support organizations
WSO and WHO
ISS, one of the incorporated organizations of WSO, is a non-governmental organization (NGO) in official relations with WHO.
Launch and develop the Global Stroke Initiative, in association with WHO and WFN (World Federation of Neurology).
Its three goals are: (1) stroke surveillance, (2) public education on stroke risk factors and (3) informing healthcare providers on current stroke care options.
Publication of educational material with WHO, including patient guidelines for stroke-risk reduction and inter-country comparison of Risk Factors.
Launch of the International Journal of Stroke in 2005.
Organization of World Stroke Congresses.

WORLD STROKE DAY
Declaration of the World Stroke Day on October 26, 2006 at the Joint World Congress on Stroke in Cape Town, in collaboration with the WHO and WFN, to focus attention on stroke as a preventable and treatable disease.
