STRUCTURE
The course will consist of a series of lectures – the time allocation should allow ample time for discussion and debate.
The day is divided into 4 sections:
- Section 1 – introduction and methodology
- Section 2 – assessment of the heart, gut and muscle
- Section 3 – assessment of the brain
- Section 4 – research directions
The introductory section will put the day into context and provide methodological background in NIRS and Doppler ultrasound for those not familiar with those techniques.
The second section will emphasize the ‘circulation’ remit of the group by focusing on the challenges assessing cardiac function and systemic blood flow, gut perfusion and the peripheral circulation.
The main body of the afternoon will be taken up with assessment of perfusion to the brain including a critical review of the different optical technologies used to assess cerebral perfusion.
The final section will be an open discussion, possibly in groups, to look at future research directions and collaborations.
