opening ceremony and welcome reception

In Memory of Professor Emerita P. Helena Mäkelä

Registered participants are invited to attend the Opening Ceremony of ISPPD-8, which will be conducted in the memory of Helena Mäkelä, a pioneer in the development of pneumococcal vaccines one of ISPPD’s co-founders.

Part 1:  Opening remarks and tribute to Professor Helena Mäkela  by Ron Dagan, Chair of ISPPD Board, Rosanna Lagos,  Symposium Chair and Hanna Nohynek, ISPPD Board Member

Part 2:   Overview of ISPPD-8’s Scientific Program from Rosanna Lagos, Symposium Chair 

Part 3:   A celebration of Latin America! The Itaipú Choir will perform a suite of worldwide popular Latin American songs, followed by a special presentation of music from Chliean band Bordemar and images of the Deep South. 

The Welcome Reception will take place following the Opening Ceremony in the Exhibition Area (included in registration fee).
A light buffet will be offered. 

Sputum Cup soccer match

Wednesday, March 14

6:15-18:15 at the Rafain Palace
Join us for a fun and friendly game of soccer amongst ISPPD-8 participants.
This event is open to all participants and is included in your initial registration fee.
There will be 2 teams – Latin America vs. Rest of the World

  • 10+1 players on each team plus an unlimited number of substitutions
  • The match will run for 60 minutes (25 minutes per half, plus a 10 minute break)
  • There is a minimum of 3 players from both genders on the field at the same time
  • Normal soccer rules apply
  • Remember to bring footwear suitable for playing soccer!

Participants who are not staying at the Rafain Palace may bring their sport clothing with them. There will be an unmanned cloak room to keep belongings during the day and a changing room accessible prior to the game.
