Helga B. Salvesen, MD, PhD
(1963) is Professor in Medicine and Consultant at Section for gynecologic cancer, Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen, Norway. She has also worked at the Department of Human Genetics, the Univeristy of Chicago (1998-99) and Harvard University, Boston, USA (Visiting professor in 2004-05). The main scientific focus is presently on the translational aspect of clinical research, acknowledging that more effective treatment for patients with metastatic gynecologic cancer is needed. Also, improving the selection of patients for individualised treatment is important. Her work to promote this have led to publications in the top ranked journals for experimental studies as Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Cancer Research as well as the top clinical journals as Journal of Clinical Oncology and the New England Journal of Medicine. Salvesen has contributed to the development of National standards for treatment in gynaecologic cancer and to studies translating molecular findings into clinical trials of new treatment strategies internationally. She is presently the President of the Norwegian Forum for Gynecologic Oncology (NFGO), past president of Norwegian Oncologic Forum (OF), secretary for the Nordic Society for Gynecologic Oncology (NSGO) and Senior editor for the International Journal of Gynecological Cancer. She is an acknowledged teacher, twice selected as best teacher in Medical School (Premed) at the University of Bergen. If elected for the ESGO board, the focus will in particular be on promoting translational research and implementation of individualized, molecularly based targeted therapy.
